Learning Through Play
Science 🧪 activity:
“Science education, however, has long been teacher-centered, with the teacher a the authority figure and the one with all the right answers Without doubt, such a traditional science program, involving authority-based teacher-directed instruction is inappropriate for young children. (Johnson, 1999).”
This image needs to change and turn into active and fun learning. Bringing a caterpillar and observing the developmental stages of a butterfly can enhance the joy of learning facts. Next, the observation of snow melting can provide the notion of solid and liquid water cycle. Therefore, curiosity is best fed through experience.
Maths:
Research reveals that the children most at risk for reading difficulties in the primary grades are those who began school with less verbal skills, less phonological awareness, less letter knowledge and less familiarity with basic purposes and mechanisms of reading (Burns, Griffin & snow, 1999).
Soft and colorful picture books grasp the attention of infants. This is the best time to develop their interest. Reading books with different sound effects and body movements or puppets are also helpful. Since infants willingly do tasks that they see others doing around them, they will be more inclined to start movement and participate in the activities of that environment. Nursery rhymes play an important role with music and movement. Different activities such a s fishing numbers in water, matching pictures, naming body parts, and weighing activities could be helpful for learning difficulties in children.
Developmentally appropriate activities:
With our progressive and holistic early childhood education philosophy, we understand that each child has unique needs and interests. We provide the environment and tools your child needs to thrive to the best of their abilities. When we expose children to different environments and various learning experiences, we allow them to explore their self-awareness and gain a sense of the world around them. Once they leave Tiny Tots Daycare & After school care, they’re fully prepared for the next stage of their young lives.
Group Time:
Our atypical approach to circle time is not limited to reading books or singing songs. This is simply due to our observation that children readily lose their temperament within the few minutes of the aforementioned approach.
Arts 🎭 and crafts / Painting :
The norms of our contemporary society restrict activities based on differences in gender and age. It appears as if this systematic approach dictates what is essentially “fit” for your child. We reject such motion with strong beliefs that active learning is beneficial at any given age
Therefore, messy activities do not only pertain to infants but is equally applicable to toddlers as well. Consider your child developing his intuition through continuous pouring, measuring and dumping of materials till he/she is able to get the exact amount. It is through these trial and error methods that your child will be able to refine his skills and have an opportunity to apply his/her creativity. Rest assured, the child will also benefit as the different texture and temperature of the materials will aid in sharpening their senses. Lastly, this will provide the child with a coping mechanism in which they can release their frustrations. For the safety of infants, the material provided to them will be non-toxic and edible.
